Admittedly, we had a dangerous job, but I admire you flying men. I am terrified of heights, you see, and I don’t even like to go up ladders. Before I joined the Kriegsmarine, I worked in a factory and one morning I came home after working on the night shift, and my mother told me to go up and clear the guttering. I climbed up a ladder with a bucket and a trowel, but when I got to the top I could not let go of the ladder to take the trowel out of the bucket. I could not even come down. I just stood there petrified. People passing in the street shouted good morning to me, but I dared not look down. After a while, my mother came out of the house and asked me why I was taking so long. I asked her to tell my neighbour that I wanted to have a word with him. When he arrived, I asked him to come up the ladder behind me and take the bucket so I could come down holding on with both hands. As I said, I really do admire you flying men. I could not do your job, high up in the air.
